Cat Bedtime Story
Poppy’s Garden Walk
Poppy is exploring the garden on her leash when a yellow leaf catches her attention. As she follows it, she discovers that getting back to the porch will take a little help from Eli.
Poppy padded after a yellow leaf as it skittered past the porch steps. It scooted across the bricks, slipped by a row of little blue flowers, and came to rest beside a round flowerpot.
Poppy stopped. Her ears tipped forward. The leaf lifted in a small puff of air and scooted again.
“Wait for me,” Poppy seemed to say, and followed.
Eli held the other end of Poppy’s leash. Poppy wore a snug harness that fit comfortably around her shoulders and chest. Eli stayed close and kept the leash loose while she sniffed around the garden.
The front garden was small, but it held many interesting things. Poppy sniffed a smooth stone. She watched an ant carry a crumb between two blades of grass. She peered beneath a low shrub, where a dry leaf rested like a tiny brown roof.
Eli crouched beside her. “What do you think is under there?”
Poppy’s whiskers brushed the leaves. Nothing moved, so she turned away. The yellow leaf had tumbled farther, near the flowerpot. Poppy followed its path, walking around the pot to get a better look.
Eli paused by the blue flowers while Poppy watched the leaf. The loose leash slipped around the flowerpot’s narrow base and caught beneath its saucer.
The leaf caught against the pot’s rim. Poppy sat and watched it wiggle. A breeze lifted one edge, but it settled again.
“Not going anywhere just yet,” Eli said.
Poppy decided she had seen enough. The porch was only a few steps away, with its familiar mat and the screen door beyond. She turned toward home. Her paws made quiet taps on the path as she started back.
Then the leash pulled snug against her harness.
Poppy paused. The porch was right there, but something behind her seemed to hold the leash. She tried one small step forward. The pull grew firmer.
She looked back at the flowerpot, then at Eli. Eli held the leash without tugging.
“Let’s see what’s happening,” he said softly.
Poppy stood still and watched the leash curve around the pot. She wanted to get back to the porch, but the caught leash needed Eli’s help.
Poppy leaned toward the porch and tried another step. The leash tightened against her harness, so she stopped.
“I see,” Eli said. “We won’t pull.” He held the leash lightly, leaving a little slack, and walked over to the flowerpot. Poppy stayed where she was.
Now Eli could see the whole snag. The leash had slipped around the pot’s narrow base and caught beneath the edge of its saucer. Poppy stood on one side of the pot, and Eli was on the other. The leash ran from his hand, around the base, and back to Poppy.
Eli crouched beside the pot. He gathered the slack so the leash would not pull on Poppy, then gently lifted the loop over the saucer’s edge. The leash came free.
“There,” Eli said. “All clear.”
Poppy watched as Eli carried the loose leash back to her. It hung in an easy curve between them. She took a step toward the porch. No tightness. Another step. Still loose.
Eli walked beside her, keeping the leash slack. “Let’s head home.”
Poppy went past the blue flowers, the smooth stone, and the low shrub. At each familiar spot, she glanced down, then continued toward the porch.
The porch mat waited at the top of the steps. Poppy placed one paw on it, then another. Eli followed. Behind them, the flowerpot stood where it had been, and the yellow leaf rested on its rim.
Poppy sat on the mat and washed one paw. Her garden walk had taken her around a few small things, and Eli had helped her get back to the porch.
Eli unfastened Poppy’s leash, then checked that her harness sat comfortably before helping her out of it. Poppy stretched her shoulders and spread her toes on the porch mat. The evening air carried the smell of damp soil and the flowers by the steps.
The yellow leaf lifted from the flowerpot. It skated across the path, turned once in the breeze, and floated toward the porch.
Poppy watched from inside as Eli opened the screen door. She settled on the cool floor by the doorway. The leaf sailed past the steps and out toward the quiet sidewalk.
“Good night, little leaf,” Eli said.
Poppy blinked at it through the screen. Then she turned away from the garden and followed Eli into the living room. Her paws moved softly over the floor. She rubbed her cheek against the corner of her favorite cushion, leaving a familiar scent there, and climbed onto it.
Eli set a bowl of water nearby. Poppy took a few sips, then licked one drop from her whisker. Outside, a car rolled along the neighborhood street and disappeared around the corner. The porch grew quiet again.
Eli sat beside the cushion and stroked Poppy’s back from her head to her shoulders. Poppy purred, a low rumble that seemed to fill the little room. She remembered the garden path: the stone, the blue flowers, and the round pot that had held her leash for a moment.
“You were a clever explorer,” Eli whispered.
Poppy settled on the cushion with her paws folded under her body. The house smelled warm and familiar. Through the screen, the porch mat lay in its usual place, and the flowerpot stood still beside the path. The yellow leaf had gone on wherever the breeze carried it.
Eli turned down the room’s lamp and sat quietly beside her. Poppy listened to the neighborhood’s soft nighttime hush and to Eli turning a page in his book. Soon, her eyelids began to droop.
The page stopped turning. Eli rested his hand beside Poppy’s cushion, and she lowered her chin onto her paws. The garden, the porch, and the wandering leaf all waited outside until morning.
