Cloud Castle Story

Puff and the Pillow Path

Puff and Tumble set off through Cloud Castle’s winding halls to deliver a pillow to the tower bedroom. When a broad rug hides the floor marks, Puff studies the rugs’ stitched shapes to work out which way to go.

Puff’s little wheels make a soft squeak as the last pillow is placed on his cart. It is a plump, white pillow, puffed up like a scoop of cloud. Tumble, Puff’s driver, pats it twice to make sure it is settled.

“There,” says Tumble, trying to keep his eyes open. “The tower bedroom is waiting.”

Puff is proud to carry the final pillow of the night. His small wheels are ready, his handle is polished, and his basket is empty except for the pillow. Beyond the pillow room, Cloud Castle’s winding halls curve between round doors and tall, quiet windows. The tower bedroom is at the very end.

Tumble climbs onto the little seat and gives Puff a gentle push. They roll past shelves stacked with pillows of every size. A row of rugs begins just outside the room. Each rug has a stitched shape at its edge: a curled shell on the first, a leaf on the next, a square on the third, and a crescent moon on the fourth.

“Good night, pillow room,” Tumble murmurs.

“Good night,” Puff squeaks back, though only Tumble hears him.

Tiny marks on the floor show the way through the halls. Puff knows them well. At the first corner, the marks point left. Puff turns. At the next, they point right. Tumble hums a sleepy tune as they roll along.

Then they reach a wide crossing where three halls meet. A broad rug lies over the floor. Its soft edges cover every tiny mark.

Tumble leans forward and squints. “Which way now, Puff?”

Puff looks left. A hall slopes toward a room full of folded blankets. He looks right. That hall curls around a tall stair. Straight ahead, the passage bends toward the tower, but the rug hides the marks that should tell them when to turn.

Tumble rubs one eye. The pillow rests snugly in Puff’s basket, but the tower is still far away.

Puff studies the rug’s edge. There, stitched in blue thread, is a little curled shell. He remembers seeing that shape just before the first turn.

“Maybe the rugs know the way,” Puff says.

Tumble sits up a little straighter. “Then let’s look carefully.”

Puff rolls close to the rug’s edge. The curled shell is stitched near the hall on the left. He remembers the rugs they have passed: shell, leaf, square, crescent moon. The shell came first, and the leaf came next.

Puff peeks down the left hall. A rug there has a tiny leaf stitched at its edge.

“That must be our way,” he says.

Tumble gives the handle a careful push. Puff turns left, and the pillow stays steady in his basket. They roll past a tall cabinet and around a corner. At the next crossing, they find another wide rug covering the floor marks. Puff spots the leaf on its edge. Farther ahead, the right-hand hall has a rug with a square stitched along its border.

“Leaf, then square,” Puff says. “We turn right.”

Tumble follows Puff’s choice. They make the turn and pass a row of little doors. One door has a painted duck on it. Another has a painted teapot. Puff’s wheels squeak once at each seam in the floor.

Soon the halls grow narrower. The tower stairs curl upward nearby, but the way to the bedroom bends around them. At a three-way turn, a large rug covers the marks again. Its edge shows a square. Puff looks ahead and sees two rugs: one with a curled shell, and one with a crescent moon.

He remembers the order. After the square comes the crescent moon.

“There!” Puff points his handle toward the hall on the right. “The moon rug is next.”

Tumble looks down the hall. “You’re right, Puff. I would have chosen the stairs.”

Puff rolls toward the crescent. For a moment, the pillow leans as one wheel bumps over a raised rug seam. Puff slows down. Tumble steadies the pillow with one hand.

“Easy does it,” he whispers.

Puff keeps his wheels straight until they reach smooth floor again. The moon-stitched rug lies ahead, just where he expected. Beyond it, a narrow passage curves toward a round wooden door.

The crescent moon is the last shape in Puff’s remembered order. He rolls to the door, and Tumble turns the little brass knob. The tower bedroom opens before them, quiet and ready for its pillow.

The tower bedroom is round, with a high ceiling and a window shaped like a teardrop. A quilt covers the bed, and one corner is turned back. The pillow on Puff’s cart seems to settle lower as if it knows it has reached home.

Tumble steps off the seat and lifts the pillow with both arms. He carries it across the room and lays it at the head of the bed. The pillow makes a small, pleased puff as it lands.

“There you are,” Tumble whispers. “Just right.”

Puff watches from beside the bed. His basket feels light now, but he is not empty of pride. He has carried the final pillow all the way through the winding halls, even when the rugs hid the floor marks. The stitched shapes had shown him where to go, one after another.

Tumble smooths the pillow’s corner. Then he straightens the quilt and gives it a neat little pat. He looks at Puff and yawns.

“You found the path,” he says. “I’m glad you were watching.”

“I’m glad you were steering,” Puff replies. His wheels give a tiny squeak, as if they agree.

Tumble guides him to a place beside the bed, where Puff can rest without blocking the door. Puff’s wheels stop on the rug. The crescent moon stitched at its edge points toward the window, and the pillow lies still beneath the quilt’s turned-back corner.

For a little while, Tumble sits on the bedside stool. He hums the same tune he hummed in the halls, only quieter now. Puff listens to the tune and to the castle settling around them: a distant clock gives one gentle tick, and somewhere below, a door closes with a soft click.

The round room grows still. Tumble rests his hands in his lap. The pillow keeps its place on the bed, and Puff stays parked beside it, his handle resting straight and his wheels quiet.

Outside the window, the clouds pass slowly by. Inside the tower room, nothing more needs carrying, and no turns remain to choose. Puff stays beside the bed while the room settles into the hush of bedtime.
