Horseback Riding Story
Ava and Dottie’s Ribbon Walk
Ava is excited to ride Dottie in a friendly arena game and earn a ribbon. With Ms. Bell nearby, she practices listening, staying calm, and guiding Dottie around the markers.
Ava’s ribbon fluttered in the breeze as she waited for her turn in the arena. It was blue, with a little silver star stitched near one end. She watched it dance in the sunlight.
Beside her stood Dottie, a small chestnut pony with a soft white patch on her nose. Dottie’s ears tipped forward as if she were watching the ribbon, too.
“Do you think we can make it all the way around?” Ava whispered.
Dottie gave a quiet snort. Ava smiled. She had been practicing her riding, and today the arena had a friendly ribbon game. They would walk around four bright markers and come to the finish line. The ribbon would wait on a table beyond the course, and Ava would collect it after she finished and got down from Dottie.
At the arena gate, Ms. Bell checked Ava’s properly fitted riding helmet and made sure its straps sat snugly beneath her chin. Ms. Bell would stay close and watch while Ava rode. Dottie wore her saddle and bridle, and a helper held her steady as Ava climbed up.
“Remember, this game is at a walk,” Ms. Bell said warmly. “Keep both hands on the reins as you’ve practiced, and follow my directions. I’ll stay right here with you.”
Ava nodded. She held the reins with both hands. Dottie took a slow step, then another, while Ms. Bell walked nearby.
Around the arena stood four markers: a yellow cone, a red cone, a blue cone, and a green cone. At the far end, a small line of white chalk showed where the finish would be. The ribbon rested on a table beyond the line, safely out of the way.
Ava pictured herself riding past every marker and reaching the finish. She wanted to do the game neatly, like the riders she had watched before her.
“You’re ready when you are,” Ms. Bell said.
Ava took a breath. Dottie’s ears flicked toward her, then toward the first marker.
“Let’s go, Dottie,” Ava said.
Dottie began at a calm walk. Together they headed toward the yellow cone, with Ms. Bell watching from the side and the quiet arena waiting for their first turn.
At first, Ava and Dottie moved along smoothly. Dottie’s steps made a soft, steady sound on the arena sand. Ava kept both hands on the reins and looked toward the yellow cone.
They passed it. One marker down.
Then they reached the red cone. Dottie bent around it in a neat curve, and Ava followed Ms. Bell’s directions. Two markers down.
The blue cone stood farther across the arena. Ava looked at the finish line beyond it. She wanted to get there. She wanted to do the whole game just right.
“Come on, Dottie,” she said. “Let’s hurry!”
Dottie’s steps grew quicker, though she still stayed at a walk. Ava felt herself getting tense and looked toward the finish instead of the next marker.
Ms. Bell gave the stop cue Ava had practiced. Dottie stopped, and Ava waited for Ms. Bell’s guidance.
“You’re safe, and it’s all right to begin again,” Ms. Bell said. “For this game, we need to keep a calm walk all the way around. Let’s go back to the start and try together.”
With the helper leading Dottie, they returned to the beginning. Ava looked at Dottie, who stood quietly with one ear turned toward her.
Ava remembered what Ms. Bell had said: look ahead, listen, and take her time. She took a breath and settled herself in the saddle, keeping both hands on the reins.
“I’m ready to try again,” Ava said. “We can take our time, Dottie.”
Ms. Bell nodded and walked beside them as Dottie started at a calm walk. Ava looked toward the yellow cone and followed Ms. Bell’s guidance. Together, they turned around it and headed for the red cone.
Ava and Dottie passed the red cone again. This time Ava kept her eyes on the next marker instead of the finish line. Dottie’s steps stayed quiet and even, with Ms. Bell close by.
They reached the blue cone. Ava followed Ms. Bell’s directions, and Dottie curved around it at a calm walk. Three markers down.
The green cone waited near the far side of the arena. Ava and Dottie walked toward it, one steady step at a time.
“Easy turn,” Ms. Bell said.
Dottie curved around the green cone. Ava looked ahead toward the white chalk line and kept both hands on the reins.
Now the finish line was straight ahead. It seemed closer than before, though Ava and Dottie were moving at the same gentle walk. Dottie’s steps stayed even as Ms. Bell walked beside them.
They reached the white chalk line.
“Finished!” called Ms. Bell, smiling.
Ava let out a happy breath. She had started again and ridden calmly around all four markers. Dottie stopped beside the line, calm and steady.
“You did it,” Ms. Bell said. “You listened, took your time, and rode the whole course at a walk.”
Ava smiled at Dottie. “We did it together.”
Ms. Bell helped Ava down, then led Dottie while Ava walked beside them. When they were safely off the course, Ava picked up the ribbon from the table. The breeze brushed it against her hand.
At the gate, Ava folded the ribbon carefully. She tucked the silver star inside so it would stay neat. Dottie watched with her nose close to Ava’s shoulder, hoping perhaps for a sniff of the ribbon.
“It’s not a snack,” Ava told her softly. Dottie gave a small huff, and Ava giggled.
With Ms. Bell nearby, Ava and Dottie took a quiet walk around the edge of the arena. Their steps made a soft rhythm in the sand. The sky above the fence had turned the pale gold of evening, and long shadows rested beside the markers.
Ava carried the folded ribbon in both hands. She felt proud, but she did not need to hurry or make a sound about it. Dottie walked close beside her, warm and untroubled.
When their walk was done, Ava rested her cheek against Dottie’s smooth neck for a moment. Then she went home with the ribbon tucked safely away, thinking of steady steps, careful listening, and the peaceful rhythm of Dottie’s walk as she drifted toward sleep.
