Vivi and the Lantern Parade

Vivi is excited to march in her village’s lantern parade with her friend Nib, whose careful pace is slower than the crowd’s. As the parade moves along a glowing path beneath two moons, Vivi has to decide what matters most to her.

The parade’s first lantern blinked on, and Rollo’s cart gave a cheerful little whirr.

“Ready, Vivi?” called Rollo, who wore a hat with three floppy points.

Vivi bounced beside her friend Nib. Nib was small and round, with six little feet and a shell shaped like a teacup. Nib’s six little feet carried him forward at an unhurried pace.

“Ready!” Vivi said. “We’ll march all the way to the finish together.”

Their village waited beneath two softly glowing moons. Along the winding parade route, lanterns stood on short posts. Each one had a different shape: a pear, a star, a smiling fish, and a wide yellow hat. At the far end, the parade would gather by the moon pond.

Neighbors lined up behind Rollo’s cart. Some carried bells. Some wore ribbons that swished when they walked. A group of little drummers tapped out a bouncy beat.

“Follow the cart!” called Rollo. “Off we go!”

The cart rolled forward. The bells jingled, the drums went bum-bum-bum, and the parade stretched into a bright, wiggly line.

Vivi walked beside Nib. At first, it was easy. Nib’s tiny feet tapped along, and Vivi matched each step.

Soon, the lantern-lined trail led beside a pond filled with smooth blue stones. The drummers picked up their beat. The marchers moved faster.

“Wait for me!” Nib called.

Vivi slowed down. The parade line pulled ahead. She hurried to catch up, but Nib was still beside her, taking careful steps.

Vivi looked from the cart to her friend. She wanted to march with everyone, but she wanted Nib beside her even more.

The first lantern stood just ahead, shaped like a pear. Its light fell across the path.

“Let’s catch up at the next one,” Vivi said.

Nib nodded and kept moving. They reached the pear lantern together, but the last drummers were already far ahead.

Vivi glanced along the route. Other lanterns waited in the distance, one after another.

She watched the parade hurry onward. Then she looked at the lantern beside them, and a new idea began to form.

Vivi hurried after the parade, but she kept looking back to make sure Nib was coming. Nib’s little feet tapped slowly across the path. The line of marchers stretched farther away.

At the star lantern, Vivi stopped. Nib caught up beside her.

“Maybe you should go on,” Nib said. “You can still march with the others.”

Vivi looked at the star lantern. Then she looked down the route, where the fish lantern and the hat lantern waited.

“What if the lanterns were places for everyone to pause?” she asked. “We could stop at each one and let the whole parade catch up.”

Nib’s eyes grew wide. “You’d ask them?”

Vivi felt a little wobbly inside, but she stepped to the path’s edge and waved both arms.

“Rollo! Could we pause at every lantern?” she called. “Nib can’t march as fast as the line, and I want us all to arrive together.”

Rollo pulled his cart to a stop. The bells quieted. The drummers lowered their sticks.

“That sounds like a parade plan,” he said. “What do you think, everyone?”

“Let’s try it!” called a ribbon dancer.

So the marchers waited at the star lantern while Nib came along at his own pace. When he reached them, they cheered—not loudly, but with friendly claps and jingles.

The parade set off again. At the fish lantern, everyone paused. Nib arrived, and a drummer showed him how to tap the beat with one tiny foot.

At the hat lantern, the marchers rested while Rollo’s cart made its cheerful whirr. Each pause gave Nib time to catch up, and gave everyone time to notice something along the way: a pebble shaped like a nose, a sleepy flower, and a trail of little footprints.

Soon they reached the last lantern before the moon pond. Nib looked down the final stretch. It was short, but the marchers’ feet were ready to hurry.

“Would you like to lead us?” Vivi asked.

Nib blinked. “Me?”

“You know the pace that brings us all together.”

Nib stepped to the front. The drummers tapped a slow, steady bum-bum. Rollo’s cart rolled behind him, and Vivi marched at his side.

Together, the whole parade followed Nib toward the finish.

The moon pond waited at the end of the path. Its smooth water held the two moons like round lamps, and the last lantern stood beside a little wooden platform.

Nib led the parade all the way there. His six feet moved in their careful rhythm. The drummers kept time, the bells jingled softly, and nobody rushed ahead.

When Nib reached the platform, Rollo parked his cart. The marchers gathered around, making room for Vivi and Nib at the front.

“We made it!” Vivi said.

“We made it together,” Nib replied.

Rollo handed Nib a small ribbon. It was the color of the pond at dusk, with a tiny lantern stitched at one end.

“For leading the last stretch,” he said.

Nib touched the ribbon with one little foot. “I liked the pauses,” he said. “I could see the whole parade each time we waited.”

The villagers settled on the grass around the pond. The drummers set their sticks down. The ribbon dancers folded their streamers, and Rollo’s cart gave one last contented whirr before becoming still.

Vivi and Nib sat together by the water. From there, they could look back along the route. The lanterns made a row of friendly shapes: pear, star, fish, hat, and the little one beside the pond. Their lights traced the way the parade had come.

“Each one helped us find the next,” Vivi said.

“And gave everyone a place to wait,” Nib added.

A cool evening breeze stirred the grass. Around them, voices grew quieter. Someone hummed the parade tune, slow enough for Nib’s feet to follow. Vivi leaned against the wooden post, and Nib rested his shell on a folded scarf.

The two moons stood above the village, keeping watch over the pond and the resting parade. The lanterns along the path stayed lit, marking every turn, every pause, and every step they had shared.

Nib gazed at the glowing route until his eyelids grew heavy. Beside him, Vivi listened to the last quiet notes of the tune, while the village settled peacefully beneath the moons.
