Deep-Sea Story
Milo’s Little Light Parade
Milo wants to lead his friends through a deep-sea valley to their picnic ledge, but his lantern keeps fading when he tries too hard to make it shine. With Dot and Bo by his side, he looks for a calmer way to find the path, one arch at a time.
“Ready, set, glow!” Milo calls, and then his light gives a tiny blink.
Dot the dumbo octopus flaps her ear-shaped fins. “That was a very small start.”
“Small starts are still starts,” says Bo the sea cucumber. He wears a loop of sea grass like a parade sash.
Milo’s lantern shines near the tip of his head. He swims in a little circle, pleased with himself. “Follow me! The picnic ledge is just beyond the rock arches. We’ll march in a line, wave our fins, and sing our parade song.”
“What’s the song?” Dot asks.
Milo hums three notes: “Bum-bum-bloop!”
Bo joins in with a low “Buuum.” Dot adds a happy “Bloop!” and the three friends set off through the deep-sea valley.
All around them, tiny drifting lights float past like slow-moving specks of dust. The valley floor is smooth and sandy, with tall rocks on either side. Ahead, shadowy arches curve over the path, one after another.
Milo swims in front. “The first arch is easy to spot,” he says. “Then we go through the next one, and the next one, and there’s our ledge.”
Dot paddles close behind him. “I can already imagine the picnic.”
“Seaweed rolls,” says Bo. “And little crunchy bits.”
“And a place to parade,” Milo adds. He lifts his head so his lantern shines brighter. “I’ll make sure everyone can see me!”
His light grows big and bright. Then it wobbles.
Blink.
Milo’s lantern dims until it is only a faint dot.
Dot stops swimming. “Milo? Which way is the first arch?”
Milo turns left, then right. The valley looks wider in the dimness. “I thought it was that way,” he says. “Or maybe that way.”
Bo gently taps the sand with his tail. “We can wait here together.”
Milo looks back at his friends. He wants to lead the parade, not leave them guessing. “I’ll try again,” he says, and swims a little ahead. “Ready, set—” His light flickers once more, and the next arch remains hidden in the dusky valley.
“Let’s not hurry,” Dot says. She floats beside Milo, her fins moving slowly. “We’re together, and the arch will still be here.”
Milo tries to smile. “I just want my light to be big enough. If it’s brighter, everyone can follow me.” He squeezes his eyes and strains to shine.
His lantern grows for a moment, then fades again.
Bo rolls gently onto his side. “When I try to curl into a perfect ball, I wobble all over.” He gives a small wiggle. “Maybe your light doesn’t like being bossed around.”
Dot looks closely at Milo’s lantern. “Wait. A little while ago, when you were humming, your light came back.”
“I was humming?” Milo asks.
“Bum-bum-bloop,” Dot sings softly.
Milo chuckles. “That’s our parade song.” He stops squeezing his eyes shut. He lets his fins rest at his sides and hums the three notes again.
His lantern brightens—not like a huge lamp, but like a clear little bead of light. It holds steady.
Dot points with one arm. “There! I can see the edge of the first arch.”
Milo turns. His small beam reaches the nearest rock arch, showing its curved opening and the sandy path beneath it.
“That’s enough to see where we’re going,” Bo says.
Milo looks at the arch, then at his friends. “One arch at a time?”
“One arch at a time,” Dot agrees.
Milo swims forward at an easy pace. His light shows the arch. Dot follows, and Bo comes after her, singing “Buuum-bum-bloop” in a deep, wobbly voice.
Beyond the first arch, the path bends around a round rock. Milo pauses and points his light toward the next opening. The friends pass through together.
At each arch, Milo waits until Dot and Bo are close. He hums when his lantern starts to quiver. The little light steadies, and the next part of the path appears.
At last, the final arch opens onto a broad picnic ledge. Sea grass curls along its edges, and a flat patch of sand makes a perfect place to line up.
“We made it!” Dot cheers.
Milo’s lantern stays steady. “And now,” he says, “we can begin our parade.”
Bo reaches the middle of the ledge and turns around. “Parade line, please!”
Dot flaps her fins twice and settles beside him. Milo takes his place at the front, his small light shining ahead. For a moment, the three friends simply look at one another.
“Should we make our lights brighter?” Milo asks.
“Let’s make them ours,” Dot says.
Dot’s arms glow with a calm blue-green color. Bo’s sides shine a mellow gold. Milo’s lantern keeps its steady, clear beam. Their lights fall across the sand and the curling sea grass, each one different from the others.
“Bum-bum-bloop!” Milo sings.
“Buuum-bum-bloop!” Bo answers.
Dot twirls once, slowly, and waves all eight arms. Bo wiggles along the ledge in a dignified little shuffle. Milo leads them in a loop around the picnic place, then back to the starting spot.
They parade past a smooth stone shaped like a dumpling. They parade past a frond of sea grass that waves as if it is cheering. They parade past a tiny drifting light that bobs along beside them for a few moments.
When the song ends, Dot makes a tiny bow. Bo bows too, though he tips over and rolls gently onto his side.
“That was my grand finale,” he says.
Milo laughs. “It was excellent.”
They settle together on the broad ledge. The seaweed rolls wait in a neat little pile, and Bo shares the crunchy bits. Dot tells a funny story about once mistaking her own shadow for an extra dance partner. Bo chuckles so quietly that a pinch of sand puffs up and floats away.
The valley grows still around them. Their three lights rest over the ledge, while the drifting lights pass at an unhurried pace. Milo watches his lantern’s small beam touch the nearest rock arch.
“I didn’t need to shine all the way to the picnic place,” he says. “Just far enough to show the next arch.”
Dot nestles her head against the sand. “And we were right behind you.”
Bo’s eyelids droop. “Best parade. Best ledge. Best crunchy bits.”
Milo hums their song once, very quietly, as the friends rest beneath their own little lights, sleepy and content after the parade.
