Coral Reef Story
Remy and the Lantern Plankton
Remy has promised to guide a group of lantern-bright plankton to a gathering on the sandy reef floor. When currents scatter their line, he looks for a calmer route through the coral arches so everyone can stay together.
“I’ll bring the glow,” Remy promised, as the plankton sparkled like tiny lanterns.
The young damselfish hovered beside a glowing patch near the reef’s outer edge. Dozens of little lights bobbed in the open water like green commas. Remy had been asked to guide the plankton to the evening gathering, where the reef’s neighbors would share songs and stories on a wide, sandy place.
“Is it far?” asked one of the tiny creatures. Her light blinked whenever she spoke.
“Not very,” said Remy. “We’ll pass the tall fan coral, then go through the blue arch. Soon we’ll see the sand.”
He pointed toward the reef. Its winding shapes included tall towers, knobby gardens, and arches that made doorways beneath the sea. Farther in, fish were gathering near the sand. A sea snail wore a cap of bubbles, and two shrimp swept the ground with their whiskers.
“Follow close,” Remy said. “One glow, then the next.”
The plankton formed a line behind him. Remy led them past the coral fan, checking that the little lights stayed together. At first, the trail was easy to follow.
Then a gentle current slid across the open water. It nudged the last creature sideways. The next drifted after her, and soon the glowing group had stretched into a wiggly line.
“Wait for us!” called a voice from the back.
Remy turned and swam back to gather them. The current eased, and the group started forward again. But in the open water, the plankton slipped away from his route, each light drifting in a different direction.
Remy glanced toward the sandy gathering place. The first notes of the evening song floated through the water. There was still time, but not much.
“I’ll find a way we can all travel together,” he said. The little lights blinked around him. Remy studied the coral arches nearby. One curved beneath a broad ledge; another wound behind a knobby tower.
“One glow, then the next,” he whispered, and swam toward the arches.
Remy reached the first arch and peered through. It made a curved tunnel, with a sandy channel below and little pockets in the walls where tiny fish peeked out.
“Stay beside the coral,” he called. “We’ll go one arch at a time.”
The plankton followed in a bright, bobbing row. A small current brushed the outside of the arch, but beneath its broad ledge the water barely moved.
“One glow, then the next,” Remy said.
They passed through the first arch together. A second curled around a garden of orange coral. Remy guided the group along its sheltered inside curve.
“This is much easier!” said the blinking creature at the front.
Remy smiled. “The coral is giving us a hand.”
As they reached the second doorway, the open water gave a quiet tug. A few lights drifted toward the edge of the arch. Remy darted between them and the current, then pointed to a narrow passage under the coral.
“This way!”
He waited until each little light was beside him, then led the group through. The coral arched overhead like a winding roof. The water stayed calm, and the plankton stayed together.
At the last arch, the sandy gathering place came into view. Angelfish, a sleepy turtle, and the two shrimp were settling in. The reef’s evening song had begun with a low, welcoming hum.
Then the passage opened onto a small patch of open water. The current curled around the final coral point, and the little lights began to separate again.
Remy felt a flick of worry, but stayed beside the group. He spotted a shallow notch in the coral, just wide enough for them. It led around the point and back under the arch.
“Follow the coral’s curve,” he said. “I’ll wait on the other side.”
Remy zipped through the notch and turned to face his friends. One by one, they followed the sheltered curve. One tiny light paused at the bend.
“You can do it,” Remy called. “One glow, then the next.”
The light bobbed forward. The others followed, and soon the whole group was beside Remy again.
Together they passed beneath the final arch and reached the sand just as the gathering began. The reef welcomed their traveling lights.
The gathering spread across the sandy place. Fish found spots between smooth stones, and the sea turtle rested near a coral pillar. The shrimp folded their whiskers neatly and listened.
The plankton arranged themselves in a loose circle, their lights making bright patches on the sand. Remy stayed beside them, glad his new friends had all arrived.
“You found us a lovely way,” said the blinking creature.
“We found it together,” Remy replied. “You kept following, even when the water tugged.”
A little yellow fish began the evening song. Its notes traveled beneath the arches and around the coral towers. Other voices joined in: a low hum from the turtle, a soft chirp from the shrimp, and a gentle chorus from the fish.
The plankton swayed in time. Remy swam a slow circle around them, now simply enjoying their company.
“One glow, then the next,” he murmured.
The little lights blinked in answer. No one hurried. Even the water seemed to settle into an easy pace.
When the song ended, friends exchanged good-night waves. The turtle tucked in her flippers, and the shrimp rested their whiskers on the sand. Remy showed the plankton a sheltered nook beside a low coral arch, where they could stay together through the night.
“Will you visit us tomorrow?” asked the smallest creature.
“I’d like that,” said Remy. “I know the way now.”
The group gathered beside the arch. Remy rested nearby, where he could see their lights without blocking the sandy path. Above them, the reef’s colors softened in the dim water. The tall fan coral waved slowly as the last notes of the song faded beneath the winding arches.
The calm water rocked Remy beside his friends. One by one, the lights grew quiet, and the night settled over the reef.
