What makes a good bedtime story for a 5-year-old?

Five-year-olds can follow longer stories than toddlers, and they love a little excitement. Before bed, though, the story should land softly. These are the things that tend to work.

What tends to work

  • one clear main character a child can identify with
  • a goal and a small obstacle – but no real danger
  • familiar words and short sentences that sound good read aloud
  • a bit of humor or repetition kids can look forward to
  • an ending that slows down instead of building to a new climax

How long should it be?

Many families read for five to fifteen minutes. A short story that ends calmly is often better at bedtime than a long chapter that stops at the most exciting moment.

Free stories and personal ones

Our free bedtime stories are sorted by topic and show the ages they’re meant for. If you’d like a story where your own child is the hero, a BedtimeWish is written just for them.
